#KIDspeakNZ

A collaborative initiative which started on Twitter!

Twitter does this!

What starts off as a friendly korero about the ‘lives in our classrooms’ can lead to an initiative such as this.

Six teachers are the founders of this KIDS twitter chat…a chat where KIDS ask the questions about topics that KIDS want to talk about…

Bex also known as @paradisecreated

Rachael also known as @chaelebel

Kaehlah also known as @KaehlahD

Karen also known as @Kar3nlj

Belinda also known as @beebryhte

and myself Kerri also known as @kerriattamatea

I am sure I speak on all their behalves when I write this first post after our very first chat today when I say …

“Student voice rules!”

Thanks to @paradisecreated whose students came up with today’s questions about DEVICES IN THE CLASSROOM.

Thanks to @stuartkellynz who joined in with his Year 13 English class to share some dialogue around this topic.

All the kids who participated contributed thoughtfully and responsibly…wonderful credit to all the teachers who have obviously made Digital Citizenship a top priority in their classrooms.

After the library chat

Posted: May 19, 2016 by Kerri in Uncategorized

Today was the first #KIDspeakNZ for the year.

A couple of my kids were keen to gather student voice around what a modern library should be like, what it should have in it, what it should be used for.

These were the questions Alex and I came up with:

  1. What should a modern library space LOOK like?
  2. What should a modern library space SOUND like?
  3. What sort of RESOURCES/THINGS would you expect in a modern library?
  4. What do you think a modern library should be used for?
  5. Would it be easier to find what you want if the FICTION collection was grouped into GENRE – type of story – rather than by AUTHOR?

I showed Alex how to schedule his Question tweets so they came out every nine minutes and this left him free to reply and question to others who were answering. He did REALLY well and it was awesome to see him hosting this chat.

Here is the Storify for you all to read through.

Thanks to all the teachers who allowed their kids to participate and share their thoughts today. LOTS to work with now:)

Let’s chat Libraries

Posted: May 11, 2016 by Kerri in Uncategorized

So with a re-furbished library, a new librarian, and a focus on creating a ‘reading culture’ in our school, Alex from ‘theONE6’ decided to survey our class about what a modern library should look like, what it should be used for, and what should be in it.

Then we decided … why not ask some OTHER kids who are not in our class the same questions and find out what students today REALLY think about a modern library.

Here are the questions for the chat. Alex will schedule them about every 8 minutes. Please reply with A1, A2, A3 etc so when we Storify the chat it all makes sense:)

Please WATCH THIS SPACE for the day and time of this chat.

WELL

What can I say!

Today’s #KIDspeakNZ chat was (searching the thesaurus for the most accurate adjective)

“AWE-INSPIRINGLY PHENOMENAL”

Yes… those are fairly accurate!

It was an absolute pleasure to assist Marianne (@knowclue) with her venture to gather some NZ student voice on KIWI KIDS thoughts about whether schools are keeping up with the technology kids are using outside of school.

There were about 14 classes participating in #KIDspeakNZ today! Around 900 tweets! It was FAST!

Reading over the STORIFY really demonstrates that many New Zealand classrooms are doing well when it comes to their use of technology. The positivity which resonated from the students’ tweets was truly impressive and exciting.

I am proud to be a New Zealand teacher.

I am proud to be a connected New Zealand teacher.

Thanks Marianne for connecting with me at #BFC530 as it was this connection which led to this chat today!

Go HERE for the Storify and read for yourself:)

#KIDspeakNZ Chat #2

On Wednesday 23rd September from 9.30am  – 10.15am we are running our second Student Chat.

Our  guest host is Marianne Malmstrom (@knowclue) from New Jersey who is over for ULearn15. You can link to her wiki here and her blog here.

Marianne has come up with 7 questions to ask Kiwi Kids their thoughts around the connections between the way kids learn outside of school to the way they learn in school.

  1. What technology do you use outside of school to play, learn & connect with friends?
  2. Are schools keeping up with the way you use technology outside of school?
  3. Everyone is an expert at something. If you were to create a tutorial on ANYTHING in the world, what would it be?
  4. ‘No Future Left Behind’ was created 4 an international ‘Flat Classroom’ project. Do these kids speak 4U?  https://youtu.be/kra_z9vMnHo
  5. Q4b  (if yes) No Future Left Behind was created 6 years ago. Are we there yet?
  6. If you could change one thing about the way you learn in school, what would it be?
  7. What is one thing you would like teachers to know about the way YOU like to learn things?

To be able to respond thoughtfully to Question 4, it would be awesome if teachers could show the video to their class prior to the chat.

Please tweet answers with A1 , A2, A3 etc.

The questions will be tweeted out every 7 minutes so it would be good if you have your answers ready to go.

HAVE FUN
